On Monday night's "Daily Show," Jon Stewart mocked the media's willingness to peddle insane rumors about Barack Obama — and their tendency to blame the rumor-mongering on internet sites. Calling it "Baracknophobia," Stewart showed clips of anchor and pundits from all three cable networks repeating baseless rumors (Muslim, plagiarist, sexist, etc.) about Barack Obama (and his wife Michelle).

The highlight of the clip comes about 2:25 in, when Stewart says, "Oh, this is interesting. SomeguyI'veneverheardof.com is reporting presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama has lady parts. Obviously scurrilous and unfounded, we'll examine it tonight in our special, 'Barack Obama's Vagina: The October Surprise In His Pants.'"

The problem isn't email or the Internet. The problem is that people are so lazy and stupid they believe everything they read or hear - especially if it flatters them by reinforcing their fear of black people.

Considering the first paragraph is about Mike Dukakis, I give that "account" VERY LITTLE creedence. The whole entry is a demonstration in tap-dancing and political jiu-jitsu. "Well, the muslim annotation was probably due to his father being a drunk muslim who never abides by the strict tenets of the religion." WTF?!??? Talk about speculative conjecturalization.

Look, you back my point up. And I thank you for that. You can have all these "fact check" speculations all you want. The fact is he WAS a muslim. He said he was NEVER a muslim. It's something SO STUPID to lie about. I can't fathom what would possess someone in Obama's position to lie about that. The only thing I come up with is his lack of judgement. Which has been suspect throughout his campaign.

It has never been a fact. The perpetual insistence that Obama has got to be a Muslim is a scare tactic utilized by Obama haters in the hopes of frightening the ignorant and the weak-minded away from Obama. The perpetrators of such a notion remind me of Chicken Little who kept insisting that the sky was falling. Well, the sky is not falling!

I love Jon Stewart... I won't hold this against him. The media loves Obama. I wish there were suck a thing as barakaphobia. In small doses that would be good for this country.

I guess Jon made up all of the clips that we watched.

Meanwhile, McBush actually has said degrading things to and about women. He also has the support of a minister. This minister has more than an anger issue and a neurotic idea on the origin of the HIV virus. Hagee things that the Holocaust was a good thing. Ditto, Katrina.

McBush is so far out on the fringe that it is incredible. He is so beholden to big oil and the military that he will crap on the american people. Yet, he is portrayed as a moderate patriot.

Incredible.

This show and the Colbert Report are literally what keeps me from breaking down into sobs on a regular basis. It is really difficult to follow the news and maintain my good humor. If not for them, I would be distraught every night

Seriously. You start to feel like you're the only one who notices crap like that. At least there's SOMEBODY who calls them on it. Pretty sad it takes a guy doing a fake news show on Comedy Central to do it though. Thank you John Stewart.

Colbert is even funnier. He just gets you rolling with laughter. Not to take anything away from John Stewart, it's just that Colbert's delivery is the best and his facial expressions...hahaha....you're so right. Plus both shows have told us more about the candidates than the actual press has.

The Colbert report is great too. He kind of does a satire on O'Reilly, although he met and interviewed with O'Reilly and it was hysterical. They are two political satirist, but also have other things to say. You don't have to be democrat, republican or independent as they cover all the parties equally for the most part. John Stewart tends to lean a bit to the left....but he can still be funny and go after democrats in an amusing way.

The mainstream media are no longer reporters, just partisan cheerleaders, corporate apologists, and all-around establishment whores. Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert may market their product as comedy, but they ask harder and more insightful questions than anybody on any other network, with the possible exception of Keith Olbermann during some of his better "special comments". A sad commentary on the remnants of our fourth estate, but the spirit of Edward R Murrow doesn't live on any of the "news" channels. It lives on Comedy Central. (...and the spirit of Joseph Goebbels lives on Faux News)

Exactly!

I love to watch Republicans make fools of themselves on Stewart and Colbert!

John will ask them a tough question that other "real" journalists wouldn't dare touch or else lose their cushy corporate jobs. Then, he'll smile and make an endearing joke that disarms them into answering it honestly or floundering for a good way to prove they aren't actually lying.

Colbert will do the same thing, but instead of joking, he'll agree with them whole-heartedly and then those moron's will even elaborate on their insanity! Or sometimes they intelligently shut up becuase they know they're walking right into a trap.

Either way it's wonderful to watch!

Just listen to the reporting going on in the media .... it's shameful.
Kudos to Jon Stewart and others for bringing the media shortfalls to light.

Since you lefties and neodems like to consider yourselves "open minded", let's see if you can open your minds and understand this scenario:
Let's say you're the mayor of a large metropolis and your city is under seige by drug lords and gangs. Members of the vice squad come to you and tell you that they have info from informants that all points to one guy who is responsible for most of the crime in your city. However, he is held up in a fortress of a mansion much like Al Pacino in Scarface. You want this scumbag taken down so you authorize your police force to go in and take him out. You are told he has stockpiles of weapons and drugs in his house. Your police go in and all hell breaks loose. Innocent people are caught in the crossfire and many of the drug lord's men are killed. But you catch him. During a search of the house, no weapons are found and you suspect he has moved them somewhere else. Now your police have to keep the house secure as it could become another crime-filled fortress. Now, as mayor, did you LIE to your citizens about going into that house or did you simply act on the info given which you later found to be incorrect?

Which "lie" shall we mock? WMD, Iraq caused 9/11, we've given diplomacy plenty of time, yellow cake, greeted as liberators, the entire debacle at the UN that ruined Powell's career, blowing a CIA agent's cover for petty revenge; and since then: mission accomplished, Blackwater, support and training of the troops, great equipment for the troops, torture, adequate turn around time before troops return to Iraq, medical care for vets. Pick one "yngcelt" and let's all discuss it. When are you enlisting, by the way?
UNCLE GEORGE WANTS YOU!

I actually already served my 6 years from 1993 to 1999. Now I'm too old to rejoin since I turned 35. And yes, I did try. I even wrote letters to my congressman and senators. Unfortunately, here in Hawaii they are all peacenik hippies so my requests fell on deaf ears.
And if you really want to talk about supporting the troops, training them and supplying them, remember it is the LEFTIES who call our soldiers murderers every time they refuse to hold the terrorists responsible for the deaths of civilians. It is the LEFTIES like Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore and their ilk who call for bases to be closed and funding for our troops to be used to open "peace centers" and it is DEMOCRATS who have consistently tried to block increased spendind to supply our troops. Get your facts straight son!
